Today, electronics have radically changed navigation, but understanding the basics helps you gain confidence in your equipment and your own skills.

This seminar will cover Chapter 5 in America’s Boating Course, Section 17: Introduction to Navigation, Section 18: Charts, and the Supplement: Digital Charting and Chartplotting.  

At the end of the seminar, you will be able to use nautical charts, GPS, and/or a smartphone to plan, navigate, and check your progress on the water.  Topics include determining safe routes, creating waypoints, and basic electronic navigation and planning using the free downloadable OpenCPN software. This seminar is an excellent introduction to piloting and offshore navigation.
